Thinking on Your Feet: Why Cognitive Flexibility Matters

Hello Everyone,

Our mind is very powerful. Our thoughts can make or break us. Most often, however, our thoughts are uncontrolled, our mind unfocused, and hence we fail to harness the power within the mind, particularly the subconscious mind. By listening to our subconscious mind, we can achieve cognitive flexibility which I define as the mental agility and the capacity to adapt, shift perspectives, and learn swiftly.

Cognitive flexibility is vital for navigating change, enhancing relationships, and increasing resilience. In my latest podcast episode on Transformation Talk Network, I’ve outlined the essential components of cognitive flexibility such as adaptability, perspective-taking, and emotional regulation.

The episode also provides practical steps to cultivate cognitive flexibility, including mindfulness and challenging assumptions, and features a guided meditation.

Thinking on Your Feet: Why Cognitive Flexibility Matters | Zen & The Art of NLP- Dr. Stephen Simpson

The moment we start focusing our mind on something, its power increases infinitely. Suddenly, we are able to do things we never thought we could. We are able to achieve what seemingly look like superhuman things.

Setting specific goals from time to time helps us plan our life and give it purpose. Often, thought, life twists and turns, distracting us from our goals, and we temporarily lose the momentum we had so carefully built up. Trying to stay focused on the goal on such occasions is often a bigger challenge than attaining the goal itself. But when you find your rhythm and start thinking seriously about something, what you are doing, in reality, is that you are focusing your mind on achive that goal. The moment you start doing that, you will find new opportunities coming your way. You will find closed doors magically and miraculously opening.

Adversity is never far away

We will all face adversity at some point in our lives. How we choose to respond to it will have a major affect on our happiness, and the happiness of the people who surround us.

Compared to the tragedies that many people face mine is a trivial example, although at the time it was the last thing I needed. I was due to go on stage in a few minutes to give a presentation to an influential audience. Many of whom had travelled from all parts of the world to be at this conference.

I have been in this situation many times before and enjoy the challenge of presenting new ideas to large groups. However I suddenly felt ill and the stage in front of me was the last place that I wanted to be. The clock was ticking and I had think fast.

Should I cancel at the last minute, or could I figure out how to draw upon hidden resources to get me through the next hour? This video explains how I stumbled across an unconventional idea, and is followed by the whole presentation. You will be the judge as to whether this unconventional approach worked or not.
