Why is the Night Sky Dark? Plus a Prescription for Stillness
Hello friends,
Welcome back. If we do this right today, you’ll find yourself gliding through life like a swan on a calm lake—rather than tobogganing down a black ski slope in an out-of-control wheelie bin!
Trust me, I’m a doctor. And more importantly, I’m a lizard trainer.
In one of the episodes of my podcast, Zen and the Art of NLP, we journey into the profound teachings of Zen Buddhism by exploring a seemingly simple question that has baffled astronomers for centuries: Why is the night sky dark?
If the universe is infinite and uniformly filled with stars, shouldn’t the sky be brilliantly illuminated in every direction? This fascinating riddle is known as Olbers’s Paradox. The answer lies in the dynamic, evolving nature of our universe—it is expanding, it has a finite age, and stars themselves have finite lifespans. They eventually exhaust their fuel and grow dim.
This mirrors one of the core tenets of Zen Buddhism: things never stay the same. It’s the natural cycle of life.
Whenever you look up at the vastness of the cosmos, you are always going to feel better physiologically than when you look down at your feet. As the great Stephen Hawking famously said, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious.”
The Zen Doctor’s Prescription: Finding Stillness
If you are looking to embrace a new level of success and serenity, I am thrilled to share my latest book with you: The Zen Doctor’s Prescription: Finding Stillness.

In our modern, fast-paced world, it is so easy to get caught up in the incessant and overcritical demands of the conscious mind. This book is a massive shortcut to connecting with the profound wisdom of your unconscious mind. It will teach you how to quieten the noise so your inner wisdom has room to breathe.
Whether you’re seeking personal growth, professional development, or just want to navigate life’s challenges with a calm and focused mindset, this book will help you find that sweet spot of mind, body, and soul.
My Top Tip for the Week
On a clear, dark night, find a comfortable spot to lie down and gaze at the stars for at least 10 minutes. Let the vastness of the cosmos wash over you.
If after this experience you still cling to the belief that you can control everything in the universe, then perhaps deeper reflection is needed! But if you feel a sense of awe and surrender, recognizing the inherent uncertainty and interconnectedness of all things, then you have begun to release the illusion of control and ego.
Embrace this newfound perspective, and watch as life unfolds with greater ease and grace.
If you’d like to dive deeper into this topic and enjoy a deeply relaxing guided meditation focusing on the power of the out-breath, you can listen to the full episode of the podcast right here.
Make massive progress on your projects today. And most importantly of all, don’t forget to have almost… almost too much fun.
With gratitude,
Doc Steve
